Are you feeling a little down about the change in your smile after tooth loss? Dental implants can restore your smile and raise your spirits. dental implantsOur Honolulu, HI, dentist, Dr. Cecile Sebastian, explains how the dental implant process works.

Dental implants act as synthetic roots

Your tooth roots hold your natural teeth securely in your jawbone. Dental implants do the same thing for your new tooth. Implants, which look like small titanium screws, are added to your jawbone during a minor oral surgical procedure. Your new implants begin to bond to your jawbone and will become strong and stable in just three to six months.

A dental crown completes your tooth

As soon as bonding is complete, you'll receive an abutment, a small screw that attaches your implant to a dental crown. We'll also make an impression of your mouth and send it to the dental laboratory that will create the crown. As soon as the crown is ready, you'll return to our Honolulu office, where it will be attached to the abutment.

Implants offer excellent benefits

Failing to replace a missing tooth can cause several oral health problems. Once your tooth is gone, your other teeth may begin to shift and overlap. Overlapping teeth can change your bite and also make it hard to thoroughly remove cavity-causing plaque.

In addition to bite problems and an increased tooth decay risk, you may also experience jaw resorption. The problem occurs when the jawbone underneath your empty socket shrinks because it no longer receives stimulation from tooth roots. Over time, resorption can weaken your jaw and even cause your remaining teeth to loosen. Because implants press on your jawbone the same way your roots do, resorption is much less likely to occur.

Dental implants offer an excellent tooth restoration option if you've lost just one tooth but can also be used to replace multiple teeth. Implant-supported dentures and bridges offer improved comfort and no loss of biting power.

Costs are always a concern when you consider any type of dental work. Many people find that dental implants are a less expensive option in the long-term than bridges or dentures. Because dental implants bond to your jawbone, they'll most likely last your entire life. Dentures and bridges have a limited lifespan and are usually replaced every 10 to 15 years.
