Have you always wondered how dental implants are used to replace missing teeth?dental implants

When we lose a tooth it can seem nearly impossible to understand how any artificial restoration could possibly take its place. While we completely understand that sentiment our Honolulu, HI, cosmetic dentist, Dr. Cecile Sebastian, is here to tell you that you can regain a full, healthy smile again with dental implants. Here’s why dental implants are an amazing option for those suffering from tooth loss:

Dental implants are truly the only dental restoration that is close as you will come to having a natural tooth. While nothing can ever give you your tooth back, dental implants are a pretty close second. After all, there is no other restoration that functions just like a tooth root.

The implant itself looks like a small metal screw or post. The purpose of the post is to replace your missing tooth roots. Under local anesthesia, we will drill a small hole into the jawbone where your missing tooth used to be. From there, we will implant the post into the hole. Over the course of a couple months, the bone and tissue will heal together with the implant. Once this happens, the implant has become a permanent part of your jawbone.

Now that the implant and bone are one, the next step is to attach a structure known as an abutment over the implant. You can think of an abutment like a prepared tooth that is ready for a dental crown. The abutment’s sole purpose is to connect the implant (which lies under the gums unseen) with the dental crown. Since the gums have to be opened up in order to place the abutment, the gums will require a few more weeks of healing after this procedure before the dental crown can be cemented or attached to the implant.

Implants offer a variety of benefits that other options like bridges and dentures can’t. Because implants are the only restoration that fuses naturally with the jawbone it also prevents bone loss. Furthermore, since the implant has now filled the gap left by your missing tooth there is no chance for the rest of your teeth to shift out of place.

Implants are made from titanium, so they are extremely resilient. This means that if you continue to maintain good oral hygiene and continue to see our Honolulu dentist for regular checkups your dental implant could last you the rest of your life.

Here at our Honolulu, HI, dental office, Dr. Sebastian and her staff pride themselves on offering dental care you can trust. Whether you want to get dental implants or you just need to schedule a routine cleaning, we are always here for you.
