Find out how dental filling works, why they are placed and the benefits you’ll enjoy.fillings

Most people, at some point during their lifetime, will deal with a cavity. We know that this isn’t the news you wanted to hear. Sure, our Honolulu, HI dentist, Dr. Cecile Sebastian, wants everyone to take preventive dental care seriously to protect against common dental problems like cavities and gum disease; however, if you do fall victim to a cavity, do not despair. Dental fillings are here to the rescue.

What is a dental filling?

This is one of the most common dental restorations and, just as the name suggests, this dental material is used to fill a tooth that has lost some enamel due to decay. Untreated decay is a serious issue because it will continue to spread further until the damage is irreparable. This is why those six-month dental checkups are so important for your oral health.

A filling is designed to improve the appearance while also restoring function and strength back into a tooth that has suffered from decay. A filling is most often made from composite resin, a moldable material that can easily be shaped and contoured around the cavity. Before a filling is placed, the shade of the resin we use is matched to the tooth to ensure that the only person who knows you have a filling is you. The filling will easily blend in with the rest of the tooth so you won’t even know its there.

How is a dental filling placed?

First, our Honolulu family dentist will need to remove the cavity using a dental drill. Once the cavity has been removed this will stop the spread of decay; however, the tooth still needs to be rebuilt. Once we choose the appropriate resin shade, we will apply a thin layer of the resin over the cavity. We will contour and trim it before hardening it with a dental light. We will continue to apply the resin layer by layer until the tooth is fully restored.

If you are dealing with a toothache or if you notice other changes to your oral health it is important that you don’t ignore these issues. Contact our Honolulu, HI, cosmetic dental office today to schedule a much-needed appointment with Dr. Sebastian.

Are you looking to brighten up your teeth?teeth whitening

Here in Honolulu, HI, Dr. Cecile Sebastian has what you need. Forget those days of you covering up your smile because of yellow and/or stained teeth. Your smile can become several shades whiter.

But how did they become yellow and stained anyway?

Part of the reason our teeth become discolored is because of age. Some other reasons include:

  • Smoking and Chewing tobacco
  • Eating certain foods, such a blueberries
  • Drink using a straw
  • Drinking coffee and/or tea

So how will my Honolulu dentist make my teeth whiter?

A device designed to keep your cheeks and lips open is placed your mouth. This device will ensure the tissue in your mouth does not come in contact with the gel the dentist will use to whiten your teeth. The doctor will then apply gel on the surface of your teeth.

Types of Teeth Whitening:

The in-office procedure is convenient and doesn't take long. The gel is left on your teeth for a few minutes and, if necessary, a laser is used to speed up the process. Dr. Cecile will remove the gel, then reapply the teeth whitening gel several times throughout the one-hour treatment.

Forget those over-the-counter teeth whitening kits. They don't contain high concentrations of vital components such as hydrogen peroxide. Dr. Cecile and her team, on the other hand, know exactly how to handle, use and oversee the effects of teeth whitening gels containing these materials. This will allow you to have whiter teeth in a shorter amount of time compared to the home kits and you'll have the added benefit of it being safe since dental experts will be taking care of you.

If your dental stains are severe though, you may need more than one session. This decision will depend on what your doctor's assessment of your teeth is.

If you have you have any questions or concerns about getting a whiter smile, call your Dr. Sebastian in Honolulu, HI, at (808) 537-2880.

You can renew your smile with veneers. They can be used to hide various cosmetic concerns, such as stains, chips and cracks. Veneers veneersare thin covers placed on the front of the teeth to improve their shape, color or size. Veneers can even correct spacing issues, such as small gaps between teeth. Once installed, veneers blend in with the natural teeth. The only difference is your teeth will look better than before. Veneers can be installed by Dr. Cecile Sebastian, your Honolulu, HI, dentist.

Benefits of Veneers

Veneers offer multiple benefits. They conceal a variety of cosmetic problems and renew your smile. They are also custom made for each patient, which ensures a perfect fit. Veneers can also be color matched to the existing teeth for the most natural look possible. They can also be made several shades lighter than the existing teeth for patients who wish to conceal stains, yellowing or other discolorations. Finally, once placed, veneers are permanent so there is no worry about them slipping out of place or falling out.

Placing The Veneers

The placing of the veneers is fairly straightforward. First, a mold is taken of your teeth, which will be used to create the veneers. The mold is used to create custom veneers that are the perfect size and shape for you. Once the veneers have been created, the dentist will shave a thin layer of enamel off the front of the teeth. This helps the veneer lay flat against the tooth once it is set in place so it does not protrude out past the surrounding teeth. The veneer is set in place with a special dental cement.

Whether you have teeth that are stained, chipped, cracked or even oddly shaped, you can renew your smile with veneers. To learn more about veneers and find out if they are right for you, schedule a consultation with Dr. Sebastian, your Honolulu, HI, dentist, by calling the office at (808) 537-2880.
